Our two second grade classes at Reeds Elementary School are beginning a walking program this academic year. Reeds School is in a rural area and it serves about 700 students. We teach reading, language arts, math, computer skills, science, social studies, health and physical education. We would like to increase our students' physical activity and promote good health by walking. Through this program we will decrease factors for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. It will help create lifelong habits of physical fitness, both in and out of school. It will produce longer, healthier and happier lives for the students. We would like to purchase pedometers for two second grade classrooms (41 students and 4 teachers will be participating). We will need approximately 50 pedometers. We feel the children will enjoy using this form of technology to record their progress. We will also create a student log for each child to record their number of laps they walk each day. Today's children spend too much time inside, sitting in front of the television and the video games. Through our daily walking program we will encourage our students to become healthier and more active.
