My school has a high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients.
We also have a high diversity of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
This year I have a mixed ability group consisting of nine boys and eleven girls. Some have grasped reading skills at a faster rate than others and some need a little more time. They are eager to learn.
My Project
My kids do not get much physical activity time. We go to PE once a week and recess is only 15 minutes a day, if weather permits. We have a full curriculum which doesn't allow much time to get moving and keep healthy. We do brain breaks throughout the day but that is not enough!
Imagine my kids getting fit AND learning at the same time.
The desk I am asking for are attached to an exercise bike. It has a desk to hold the work they are doing. The desk will allow my kids to keep moving and keep learning without missing a beat. My kids will stay active and keep the blood moving without sacrificing our curriculum time. My kids can exercise while they read, work out math, and even do their computer programs.
This project would change the dynamics in my room. I want my kids to be active but still get their work done. Research shows that kids learn more if they are active and moving. I have some students that are just unable to do their work if they have to remain in one position for even just 10 minutes.
My students will use this every day by rotating and taking turns. They can do their work but at the same time get their suggested 60 minutes of physical activity, too.
