I teach in a grade one through three building in an urban school district. Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households and 85% are eligible for a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me.
I may not be able to control their home life; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
During our "Camp Learn Alot" in May, I would love to supplement our class with non-fiction books and fun woodland creatures to keep the kids engaged and interested. I'm requesting copies of Step into the Forest (TIME FOR KIDS), Over in the Forest, and Forest Bright, Forest Night. Plush toys include a Bambi, Bunny, Red Squirrel, and Eastern Bluebird.
Reading non-fiction will be more fun while petting Bambi near a "fire".
I know my students will get lost ( in a good way) in our woodland study with dramatic play materials and more books to choose from. It will be a fun experience away from their usual video gaming and give them a chance to be kids for a change. At the end of the unit, the books will be prizes!
