Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves a student population that is 95% low-income, 98% minority, 62% English Language Learners, 9% Special Education students and 100% incredible. School enrollment has grown over time (and is now at full capacity) due to consistent improvement in school quality. We are now nearing almost 800 students.
We are an innovation school and we have shown significant growth in the past four years since turnaround, catapulting ourselves from one of the lowest-performing schools to the 8th in the state for growth.
My Project
Our K-2 grade students have the ability to have small reading groups for guided reading. Each of our teachers become an expert in teaching a specific level of reading and they spend their hour teaching that reading group to multiple students at different grade levels. Our students will travel to different grade-levels and teachers to get very targeted support. We are in need of durable book bags for our students to carry during their Walk to Read Block. We use gallon ZipLock bags but the bags end up tearing and we end up using multiple bags which means we are producing a lot of waste. We will have over 300 students using book bags this means over 300 plastic bags are being used. Having the ability of have reusable and durable bags will cut down on the waste that is being produced and students can use these bags for the entire year!
