The fifth graders at our school are eager to learn. They learn best by doing. Our goal by the end of the year is for our students to not only remember loving all the cool stuff we did, but remember what they learned and to take those lessons with them.
Our 5th graders are a very active group of students that need constant engagement to fulfill their hunger to learn.
They spend five and half hours in school and need the appeal of new exciting material. These students come from low income homes and need, arguably more than a typical student, engagement.
My Project
Walk Through the American Revolution is a 2 ½ hour interactive retelling of the American Revolution. Who is retelling it? The students are! It's a field trip that comes to your school! During Walk Through the American Revolution each student will be actively participating in a lively retelling of our nation’s beginnings by playing games, singing music, and through drama. Costumes are important! Each student will receive a “Character Card” in which they will dramatically portray an important historical character. Each Character Card has ideas for a costume for each character. Some students will also receive ‘Expert Word Cards’ and ‘American Experience Cards’ to memorize! Students will be divided into 3 teams. Each team will perform a Battle Scene. Each team will participate in a friendly competition for points. Teams earn points by: memorizing cards, wearing costumes, bringing props, dramatic performance, creativity and organization of Battle Scenes.
A Walk Through is an engaging and interactive educational presentation of standards-based history curriculum through literacy and the arts.
It allows students the chance to become an "expert" on vocabulary pertaining to The American Revolution and pertaining to 5th grade curriculum. Many consider the 2 ½ hour experience to be an unforgettable “in-school field trip.” Flags, maps, re-enactments, music, and games help students explore and understand the importance of American liberty and patriotism.
