Walden Save Us! Literature Chairs for Reading Outside
Help me give my students literature chairs for our daily reading sessions outside as they inhale the fresh air deeply under the majestic Sequoia trees on our campus' front lawn.
This project expired on April 12, 2019.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Maya Angelou is credited with saying, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
Most of my seniors fall well below the poverty line and speak limited English.
They did not have access to books as children, nor were they encouraged to read when they were young due to circumstances beyond their control. Despite their many obstacles, they are excited to be in class, for they look forward to my Heroic Literature class because they get to analyze novels from the exciting heroic genre such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Robin Hood, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Les Misérables. Many of my students read their first full novel on assignment in my Heroic Literature class. It warms my heart to hear students proudly declare that they have read their first book from beginning to end. I am even more proud when they add, "...and I loved it!" As they read, they mature and grow in the way they think about the human condition and the world around them.
Lightweight, portable chairs may not seem like a typical request from an English teacher, but my students would benefit academically if this request is met. Anyone who enjoys reading literature can attest that being physically comfortable is highly important. Being uncomfortable detracts from any reader's experience, especially readers who struggle for every ounce of success.
I teach in an impoverished, Title I school, and I have no climate control capabilities in my third-floor classroom.
My students are at the mercy of the weather. In September, May, and June, my classroom typically reaches temperatures in the high 80's and low 90's, so we often take our books outside into the shade of our 100-year-old Sequoia trees. There, we enjoy the 70-degree breeze and can focus on the lessons offered by great literature. My students would benefit from having this lightweight, portable chairs in order to be optimally comfortable for reading and transporting down/up three flights of stairs.
Donations made towards the purchase of 15 portable chairs will add to my seniors' ability to analyze some of the most beloved and popular epics known world-wide. My students will become better skilled and more confident readers of high-level literature. They will also become better thinkers and more compassionate citizens as they learn lessons from incredible authors like Hugo, Dumas, and Tolkien while reading in comfort and enjoying the fresh outdoors.
