My students are learning about choosing Fitness 4 Life. They will be learning about engaging and fun recreational leisure choices through Drums Alive! program this year. The school is providing the curriculum and the teacher training, but our students need the materials in order to participate!
I teach students with physical, health, and cognitive disabilities who have higher needs.
They use wheelchairs/walkers and other mobility equipment, have vision impairments, cognitive challenges, seizure disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, chromosomal disorders and other conditions.
Our entire school is a special education transition program. We're an inner city school of many cultures and races, with 75% of my students living in low income households. Many students are immigrants or first generation American.
In my music therapy class curriculum I address many topics to promote social and emotional well-being. Part of mental well-being is making good and healthy choices that raise one's quality of life. My students can learn how being involved in healthy recreation does not have to be hard or boring. It can be fun!

My Project
The requested materials are necessary to provide Drums Alive! program to our students. For our students to learn that physical and mental well-being can be found in a program currently offered in our Twin Cities area, it means they can continue this beginning outside of school in their community, throughout their entire lives!
The difference in their learning is life long.
They will learn exercise programs using the Drums Alive! materials and curriculum. This will help them be successful in any Drums Alive! program in their community. Also, they will learn that fitness for life is not just a class they can take in school.
