My kindergarten students need 30 painted lady caterpillars to raise into butterflies and 2 habitats to house them.

I teach kindergarten in a "high-need" school district, and this spring we'll be waiting for butterfly wings!

Part of our kindergarten curriculum includes a butterfly unit. We learn the life cycle of butterflies and how they grow, we read books, study posters, and create models. Nothing, however, makes science come to life like real examples to study!

I'd like to provide my students with the opportunity to observe the painted lady butterfly's life cycle right inside our classroom. The tiny caterpillars eat and grow, turn into chrysalids, and then hatch into butterflies before being released on a sunny day. I've observed this project before, and it is successful and so educational! Unfortunately, it's too expensive for our school (or individual teachers) to readily fund.

Watching the butterfly cycle unfold first hand is a valuable learning experience for my children. Having the caterpillars in our class takes something foreign and makes it tangible for my young learners. My students are beautiful, eager, and engaged, and I strive to do my very best to help them learn each day. Because of where they were born, many of them don't have the same life experiences as children born elsewhere. With your help, I can make this miracle of life real for them.
