Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a first year Kindergarten teacher in a brand new school in Chicago's West Inglewood neighborhood. The resources I am requesting will help me to create an engaging, hands-on unit about butterflies. I want to capture my students' energetic imaginations by bringing live butterfly larvae into our classroom. This experience will not only help my students understand life cycles; caring for the butterflies will also help them become more responsible. I was fortunate to student teach in a classroom that grew butterflies last year, and I will always remember the looks of joy on my students' faces when the butterflies emerged. I look forward to using the butterfly garden, puppet, life cycle models, and puzzle to bring the same sense of wonder into my current students' lives.
