Help me give my students waders in different sizes and environmental sampling equipment so that they can conduct an aquatic ecology lab to study leaf decomposition and indicator species!
My 11th-12th grade Environmental Systems & Societies scholars are brilliant! They have fearlessly tackled projects like digging through trash to learn about our school's waste habits and every day they surprise me with new questions. Some of my favorites this year so far have been "why can't we send all our waste products into space?" and "what would happen if humans went extinct?"
My scholars are filled with curiosity about the natural world but unfortunately need to learn about it from afar.
I would like for them to complete a hands-on, experiential aquatic ecology lab but we need some help getting equipment to do so.
My Project
In order to learn about aquatic ecosystems and practice completing a college-level scientific investigation, we need supplies to safely venture out into the stream near our school. Our goal is to study how different aquatic environments and microinvertebrates affect the rate of leaf decomposition.
Wearing waders will allow my scholars to access an ecosystem that they do not often interact with - streams.
The waders are important personal protective equipment that will allow brave scholars to wade into the stream near our school to collect data using the sampling equipment also on this project. We hope to use these supplies to learn more about aquatic ecosystems!
