My students need a classroom that suits the 21st century. A Wacom tablet will allow us to work interactively in real time through my current classroom setup.
It is the 21st century and I teach in a place where most kids do not have regular access to computers, the Internet or other technologies. It is my goal to create a classroom that will allow kids to see, use and experience various technologies. Why not turn my white board into a smart board?
My school is a very unique place.
We are in rural location in New Mexico bordering an Native American reservation. My student population is 85% Native American and 13% Hispanic (particularly of Mexican descent). Along with a culturally diverse student population, we are dealing with high poverty, homelessness, a transient culture and a high drop out rate; this is exemplified by our school offering 100% of the students free breakfast and lunch. In spite of dealing with high poverty and a large non-English speaking population, we are showing very good growth. In my 4 years as a math teacher, I have seen my students improve from the worst in the district to number 1 in the district. This shows that my students are poor and often behind but that they are very curious and hardworking.
My Project
This Wacom tablet will change the face of my classroom in an immediate way. The tablet will allow me to work with examples or problems as though I was working on a white board. The major difference is that I can also bring in all kinds of content from the Internet. The Tablet has many features most notably that it is wireless! This means that I can give the tablet to the students' so that they may show their own work or thought process. While using the tablet the kids will be encouraged to communicate which is often a struggle for English language learners. They will also be learning how to use new hardware, new software and how to troubleshoot various techniques. This tablet will be a game changer for all of the kids who come through my classroom.
One of my greatest struggles as a teacher is how to engage my students with technology.
I love science and technology and I so want to share this with my students. Most of my students have never been exposed to the possibilities of products that are available and are not skilled in terms of using new technologies. Truth be told I have 3 or 4 eighth graders that have never used a computer before this year! My students can gain more than you know by simply being exposed to any new technology.
