We are a classroom community of 41-second grade students that make up two sections at our school which is a rural, consolidated district located in Minonk, Illinois. There are 22 boys and 19 girls in the two second grade classes. Our district has adopted and implemented Reader's Workshop, a Best Teaching practice. Students are given the opportunity to learn the skills a 21st-century learner needs in order to be successful in their education. Our eager students look forward to learning and practicing their literacy skills in a fun, rotation-based setting.
My Project
The second-grade students at my school are responsible for mastering 100 high-frequency words. Students should be able to read and spell these words accurately by memory by the end of second grade. In order to keep the students engaged in meeting their goal, we would like to provide students with fun learning activities to practice their high-frequency words. Repetitiously writing words over and over becomes redundant and unenticing.
Imagine taking Play-Doh and Wikki Stix and creating your words with these hands-on materials.
Students learn best when they engage all facets of their brains. This can be accomplished through multi-sensory materials and activities. Wacky Word Work Wizards is an exciting and motivating opportunity for our students to do just that!
