Who's reading at Okatie Elementary? Everyone!
W. H. O. O. S. Reading stands for "We Honor Outstanding Okatie Students Reading." It is our independent reading program where everyday students in every class select and read books that are at their independent reading level as determined by an informal reading inventory.
Students have a daily goal for reading in school and at home. At the end of each marking period, students who have met their grade specific goals are recognized in front of the Okatie Elementary faculty, staff, parents, and students.
Student progress is monitored through W. H. O. O. S. Reading logs/journals and student-teacher reading conferences.
I am a second year Literacy Coach in Okatie, South Carolina. My school currently has over 693 students, with more showing up everyday. Since our building was only built for 550 students, we now have five mobile units with more on the way. I am running short on interesting children's literature from which the students can select books to read to increase fluency and strategy usage.
I am requesting leveled, high interest, fiction books for my students. The books will be rotated through classes to provide new books from which the students can choose.
I know the students will enjoy these books. I would be grateful to anyone that can help me get these books into the hands of my students. Thank you.
