Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 1st year teacher at a low-income area/school and I have struggled with my students regarding math. At the beginning of the year, most of my students' parents couldn't afford to buy them their basic school supplies. So, I took it upon myself to get a minimal amount of basic supplies for them to use. I've tried to stretch out my money, but my student loan payments and the Alternative Teacher Certification program Fees, don't leave me much to work with.
Most of my students, like I am, are visual learners and when we covered the topic of fractions, they just couldn't understand them. I tried different approaches: with pies and even with foldables, but they sure showed more interest when we had a contest (for practice) and my students needed to go to the board. I saw a change in the competitors and the rest of the students participation!
Then I heard from another teacher that her students really got to learn and understand their fractions by practicing them on individual white erase boards. They were THRILLED! My students would make good use of these individual white erase boards & markers. I could even ask them to donate (bring to school) an old sock to serve recycle as an eraser! I've learned that these mini white boards have so many great uses/purposes, but the most important ones I have in mind are: multiplications, divisions and fractions, amongst others.
I realize that this might not be a basic need, however when you see the glimpse of hope a student gets when he/she is not only learning, but completely understanding a basic concept such as math, you'll search for any means possible to ignite that spark of knowledge into a full grown fire.
