My students are amazing! I teach in one of the largest cities in the state and get the chance to work with all sorts of learners from all sorts of backgrounds. I have a complete mix of diverse students in one of the most diverse cities in the state.
There's a lot of challenges that come with this mix; but also a lot of joy and diverse thought and experiences!
My students collaborate, communicate, and share in ways that would never be possible in other schools with less of a mix.
I am lucky to be able to support my students with experiences and equipment they otherwise would not have access to. It is my greatest joy to do these kinds of projects and immersive work.
My Project
I teach a variety of amazing classes with a diverse group of students in South Portland, Maine. My programs expose students to various experiences they otherwise would never have access to: such as 3d printing, laser cutting, and VR/AR. This project is to help fund the VR/AR.
These headsets would be used immediately in an Empathy/Race unit for Media Literacy (does VR help students empathize more with the media showing different cultures and races?).
They would also be used in the future in Computer Science courses (designing 3D worlds in CoSpaces, creating 3D models and art in digital graphics, coding environments/apps and games, etc).
I have 19 headsets. My classes have a maximum (and usually filled) roster of 25. I would like 6 additional headsets as well as a wire wheeled cart to create the station with.
Essentially these will be used throughout my many classes. And I have already let other teachers in the building use this equipment as well- which is why I am requesting the cart. I'm slowing making 'stations' of my equipment so that they can be borrowed in a more accessible way for teachers.
