My students need this final piece! We have already gotten a few extra development PCs, the Oculus Rift Headset, and now this final machine to actually run the VR Headset.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
East Boston High Computer Science students have a tradition of making the most out of limited resources. The first computers used in Computer Science classes were assembled from parts scavenged by students from various old, unused classroom computers. Today we work in a menagerie of old machines and operating systems, but students are able to take AP Computer Science, Honors CSC, and Computer Graphics courses.
Eastie students are a resourceful and motivated bunch, but we have started to reach the limits of what we can do with our ancient hardware.
We have at least five types of (very old) notebooks and mac books running a variety of linux flavors, and several versions of windows. With these machines our students have programmed in Java, JavaScript, C#, Python, Processing, and Unity.
Recently we gained access to an Oculus Rift and we had to scramble to come up with enough machines for the students (working in groups, bringing in their own machines, etc.) to develop VR apps in Unity and test and modify on the VR machine. To my knowledge we were the only class participating in this loan program to actually write software for the oculus, rather than simply use provided software.
My Project
This last piece in the puzzle will provide us with a platform on which to test our VR applications. This will be the main presentation and testing machine at the front of the room which all students will have access to.
It is quite motivating and instructive for the kids to take their projects form the computer screen into the three dimensions of VR.
The kids are already excited about learning to program in VR and have even started with smaller Unity projects to get ready for the arrival of this great hulking machine. :-)
