Every morning when my students enter the classroom they are ready and eager to learn. Our school is a very diverse setting where all students are welcome and loved. My classroom alone is full of students from over five countries. Many of whom are first-generation Americans. My students have to translate their homework to their parents, meet the social and cultural expectations at home and at school, and still find time to give me a hard time when I make a spelling mistake on a presentation. These kids are incredible. After taking an overnight camping trip with them earlier this year, I can honestly say I am truly excited for the future of the world. With these students leading us, it is going to be more innovative, full of kindness, and safer than ever before.
These 5th grade students are creative, hardworking, and have a strong desire to learn.
They have a lot of passion: trying new things in and out of the classroom, constant movement, collaborating, and making the world a better place!
My Project
This project will allow all of fifth grade to hold a school wide election on May 7, 2019. This is such an important topic to cover in a school as diverse as ours that is full of students who are the first American citizens in their family. We will vote on presidential candidates, but also we will vote on a mural that will be painted in the 5th grade hallway. The unit will start off with the fifth graders learning about the candidates, the way elections work, and forming opinions of their own!
While these students may seem really young, they will be a part of selecting the leader of our country in just over eight years.
Even writing that down makes me excited! They can truly change the world!
The materials from this project will give the students the supplies they need to run the school wide election. The 5th graders will register all 854 students at our school to vote, creating voter registration cards for each. The weeks leading up to the election the students will have an infinite amount of exposure to activities that will prepare them for college and future careers. They will design campaign posters for candidates and the murals, use graphic design programs to create t-shirts, flyers, posters, and campaign videos, they will turn our large group instruction room into a polling booth, and will get to experience the election process as a whole. All of those opportunities will be made possible through this project!
Only 46% of 18-29 year olds voted in the last presidential election. My personal goal is to change that. I want these bright, loving, open minded students to lead our country, and to do that, they have to use their voice and their vote.
