Help me give my students an opportunity to learn volleyball. Our girls need a sport that unites them and volleyball is that sport. This gives them an opportunity to learn with training volleyballs.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are special because of the adversity they have had to overcome. Only a few years ago they were affected greatly by Hurricane Sandy. Many had to leave their homes and had property destroyed. They had to bus to another school for two months following the superstorm. That damage continues to this day and this year we will lose access to our schoolyard for much needed repairs due to the superstorm.

Their neighborhood isn't the safest neighborhood because of gangs and violence in addition to still feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Many parents do not let their children out after they come home from school.

At our school,​ we are very fortunate that we have a very supportive administration that believes in PE and physical activity and we have been afforded many opportunities to help our students stay in shape and make healthy decisions for their future.

My Project

Our students are at a disadvantage. Often they are prohibited from going outside due to their dangerous neighborhood. Our physical activity programs may be their only exercise during the day. Without a positive direction unfortunately joining gangs and teenage pregnancy become a far too familiar reality.

Our students are below the poverty level and do not have the opportunity that other students in the area do.

For our girls, volleyball is that opportunity to succeed, build confidence, and stay healthy. Our girls love teaching the younger students so this equipment will help us continue to give this opportunity for years to come.
