Hello! My name is Kim Ballance. I am a fifth grade teacher in a rural school located in Elizabeth City, NC. I love teaching!!!! Especially when my students can have fun and dive into a hands-on project up to their elbows.. "The messier the better. Remember, they are kids and what better way to get messy, have fun and learn than to build a volcano.
Fifth grade is required to study land forms and learn about volcanoes. Well, to learn both of them you could read about it in a book, or.. you could have a "BLAST" making one yourself. When the students make a volcano they have to understand how a real volcano works, what it looks like etc.. This creates a hands on (discovery learning) experience that will engage all the students and foster a deep understanding about this geographic concept. They will always remember this lesson and will tell their own children about the volcano the built in "Mrs. Ballance's class." What other lesson can compare with that!
I have done this lesson in the past and the expressions on the student's faces when their volcano erupts is priceless. Parents want to come to class that day and what a wonderful experience for a child who can learn required material, have an excited ERUPTION and spend quality time with a family member.
The lesson will last over a period of 2-3 weeks, studying landforms, volcanoes and rocks. Internet field trips and web cams will allow the students to visit and see real volcanoes. This activity will be the culminating activity at the end of the unit.
The volcanoes are completely safe and are erupted when you mix baking soda and vinegar creating a foamy runny flow. The materials are simple consisting of clay, baking soda and vinegar as well paint, food coloring and many many rolls of paper towels. Students will make, paint and set off their own volcano and when the activity is done, they can take it home to erupt again and again. What Fun!!!!!
