Volcanic Vents, Earthquakes and Toxic Fumes, Shaking Up Science!
My students need to feel safe, giving them basics like sharp pencils, big erasers, paper clips big and small for work and STEM projects, helps their lives have stability.
My students are our future scientists! They energetically enter the class, smiling, giving out fist bumps, and they are full of curiosity. They are unstoppable at solving problems, and designing innovative solutions.
They are creative, courageous, and enthusiastic problem solvers.
We need to give them the tools they need today, to strengthen their skills for tomorrow. They love conquering challenges. We need these kinds of innovators in our communities. There isn't a day that goes by where they don't demonstrate that they will make a difference in our world!
My Project
My students are among the highest poverty populations in our state. Due to the volcano, we have been experiencing earthquakes, lava vents, toxic gases and threats of exploding ash in our area where many of our students and their families live.
Our students are not only shaken by these unpredictable and devastating events, they come to school with no bags, no supplies, often unnerved by what they are experiencing and what might be ahead.
My students need stability and as much of a normal routine as possible. I can give them sharpened pencils, erasers, and paper clips for our daily projects in science. The Paper Clips are also used for an assortment of STEM projects with are totally engaging and give my students a strong focus away from the events happening around them outside of the classroom. They can then get right to work, not have another stress added to their lives.
These are basic needs for our projects and research, yet to give them to our students, especially now shows them we are there for them, we care, there is stability in their lives, and they can have a safe place with everything they need for class.
This is a time when giving them a hand up, will also give them a sense of constancy and caring.
