My students are enthusiastic about reading and enjoy checking out books from the media center each week. During the media/library special, students also receive technology training. Students are learning how to use Chromebooks. Each grade level has a Google Classroom page, where grade-appropriate activities are posted. Students are respectful of the technology that we use and work collaboratively to help each other learn new skills.
Over 70% of my students are reading below grade level (per 2016-2017 performance rating).
We are a neighborhood school in a high-poverty area. Many of our students come from families where the parents do not speak English.
My students struggle with written expression. Many struggle with reading as well. The combination of those issues makes it very difficult to engage students in the writing process. Having headsets with microphones means that students can focus on "expression." They will be able to speak their thoughts and later go back and edit those initial thoughts into a cohesive product.
We will use these headsets with microphones for voice typing during creative writing, writing notes during research, Google Classroom assignments, etc.
Students will be able to focus on getting their thoughts on paper, leading to greater fluency in their thought processes.
