Presently, I teach sixty-six students from diverse backgrounds who represent a microcosm of our city. The students within the school are learning Cantonese in the elementary component, and when they enter middle school, they learn Mandarin. When the students leave our school, they are able to read, speak, and write in Chinese. Our facility includes a school garden with an outdoor classroom. Along with language and the environment, the students in the middle school are exposed to community service. As an extension to the academics, the students are required to complete 45 hours of community service.
Through grants and parent support, we have built an outside garden which contains an outdoor classroom, kitchen, and cistern.
Recently, we added chickens to the garden. Parents, students, and neighbors maintain the facility.
Over the years, I have built a MakerSpace fully funded through DonorsChoose.org. Some of the tools range from PVC pipe cutters, a 3D printer, 3D doodle pens, a jigsaw, and other tools. This specific space now includes a STEAM elective for students from grades 6-8.
My Project
Every year, I have the students reflect in their Language Art Notebooks to a weekly prompt. In the past, the student's voice has remained in their personal notebook. But why not have the student's voice and opinion be shared through their journey of replicating their first book?
"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you", by Maya Angelou.
These words truly resonates with me. The culture that most children have heard is, "to been seen, but not heard". In today's society we see many children putting their words into action. Having the students put together their first book including poems, short essays, and art, will enable them to share their "Voice".
