Reading books saved my life! I was an at-risk student from a low income family. As an elementary student, reading diverse literature challenged me and inspired me to dream outside of my difficult life circumstances. Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Little Women, -to name a few, were books that acted as a ladder, allowing me to climb and grow into the best version of myself. We can change lives, one book at a time!
At our school we have recently implemented a reading club that participates in a county wide competition called "Battle of the Books." As part of the competition, students are required to read from a list of over 30 diverse literary selections.
Most of our students do not have the resources to purchase books and some of them lack transportation to peruse our local libraries. There is no funding available for our club. For this years competition, we wanted to involve book lovers, near and far. All books purchased will be used by our club and then donated to our school library, potentially benefiting 1000's of students. Please join us in changing lives! Donate today!
My Project
Providing students with diverse literature such as Freedom's School, by Lesa Klein-Branson, and Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, will open doors for them in many ways. Books donated will allow students to participate in a county wide competition, creating a sense of teamwork, ownership, and purpose. Comprehension and analytical thinking skills will be developed as students participate in rich discussion.
The reading selections will allow opportunities for growth in all areas of academic curriculum.
When our book club has finished competition, the reading selections will be donated to the school library, allowing all students from all grade levels access to rich literary experiences.
