Supplies to increase involvement of students in their community and schools.
I am a Special Education English teacher at Beach Channel High School, where 80.1% of our students receive free lunch. Our hope is that our students will become lifelong learners who will be able to contribute to society and their families. Many of our students never fully achieve this goal. As a peer mediator, I am constantly aware of student issues such as low self-esteem, aberrant behaviors, and transitioning issues. Broken homes, poor family relationships, gang violence, drugs, and poverty are problems that affect a portion of our students.
I feel that my project, the Vocational Outreach Sewing Program would bridge the gap between parents, educators, and students. I began the club with 12 troubled young ladies who were interested in learning a trade, and had nothing to do after school. Through activities such as consumer math, pattern making, design, sewing, and reading, I was able to see a rise in the student's grades, self-confidence and positive behaviors. During our sessions we also talk about personal problems. Students often share concerns that I would like their parents to hear.
My dream is to have parents learning side by side with their children. As a supplement to the trade classes, we'd offer career searches, job presentations, and remediation classes. By way of this program parents will take an active role in their child's life, the school, and community.
In order to support the initial program we need supplies which we can use to make fundraising projects a reality. These supplies include trade workbooks, sewing kits, measuring tools, notions and fabric/trims. This experience will enrich the lives of our challenged students.
Thank-you
Mrs. Ferguson
