My students need engaging learning activities to support their vocabulary development and make the learning of these basic skills fun.

V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! This is exactly what I want for my students. Especially, when they are up against unknown and unfamiliar vocabulary. Vocabulary development is a crucial factor in my ultimate goal for them of becoming both successful readers and writers.
I have the privilege of teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at an inner city charter school in New York.
As the Reading Intervention Literacy Specialist, I come in contact with students that are well below grade level in reading and writing. In fact, a majority of my students are reading two years or more below grade level. My students struggle with a multitude of reading and writing skills, but most often their inadequate vocabulary development leads to adverse effects in their ability to grow in these areas. My students maintain a curiosity for learning, despite their often negative experiences with reading and writing. However, without the support of engaging and interactive activities to motivate them to work on the basic vocabulary development skills they need, I risk losing that spark which will keep their curiosity burning.
The materials I have selected to support my students will meet them at their current instructional level of vocabulary development. That is why, while my students are in grade 6-8, the resources requested are in the 3rd-6th grade range. I have also ensured that the materials will have versatile use as the Bingo and Computer Programs can be used during whole-group instruction, the Word a Week Center can be used during small-group instruction and the vocabulary kits can be used in pairs or individually. Through these activities my students will work on using context clues, develop an understanding of the relationship between prefixes, suffixes, and root words, and increase their overall vocabulary.
Your donation will provide my students with access to support vocabulary development.
This will not only make them more successful readers and writers, but it will also help to prepare them for the skills being assessed on NYS exams. It will provide them with a more solid foundation by allowing for additional opportunities for practice through interactive games and activities that will not only support their learning of vocabulary, but also support the development of an engaging environment.
