Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project will meet the needs of my 8th grade students in our small, rural NC school. The majority of my 76 students are Latino and white. About 40 percent of the students are ESL. The Latino population is a huge and very important part of a thriving agricultural community which received severe flooding in the wake of Hurricane Florence. We missed 30 days of school which is devastating to students who need language/vocabulary immersion. Vocabulary enhancement is important to aid in literacy and my students' feelings of accomplishment.
Many students are performing below grade level in the area of reading on our state tests and NEED to be immersed in Vocabulary.
Reading and vocabulary must be facilitated in order to improve the reading skills. With the days missed this year due to hurricane Florence, it is more necessary that ever to immerse students in age appropriate vocabulary. So many of the issues students report from state testing come from lack of knowledge in the area of vocabulary.
My students are very enthusiastic, for the most part, about learning new and more English vocabulary. They truly want to improve their reading, writing, and speaking with age appropriate vocabulary.
My Project
The vocabulary and teaching materials that I have chosen will assist me in helping my ESL students learn more vocabulary, read with confidence, and speak with pride. I will be better prepared to aid them in their learning styles, needs, and proper differentiation.
The content specific vocabulary workbooks will very good for teaching the vocabulary in the areas of school, food, and community.
These are all areas where students NEED specific vocabulary early in their transitioning.
I plan to read and study in order to better assist my students with learning new vocabulary to help them feel more successful in a new country they are calling HOME.
