This is my first year in Kindergarten and I am learning to love the unpredictable chaos that often happens when new learners work together to make meaning in a complex world.
I have the wonderful privilege of working with a classroom full of energetic, hard-working, 5 and 6 year olds!
They are so self motivated to succeed and do their best each and every day. My school is located in Southern Maryland and is the home of the Seahawks. We are dedicated to excellence in teaching to meet all the needs of all our students, not just academically, but also developmentally and socially. Approximately 700 students attend the school in grades pre-k through five.
My Project
My students are just learning how letters have sounds and when you put them together in certain ways, they create words. They are emerging readers and vocabulary plays a very important role in student success.
Vocabulary is one of the basic building blocks to understanding what you are reading.
Our class will use these materials to expand and enrich their understanding of words in print. This will allow them to better access text for understanding and build confidence so they do not shy away from complex text.
The chart paper will be used in both whole group and small group to create vocabulary anchor charts, as well as for phonemic awareness lessons as we introduce word families, high frequency words, rhymes and complex vocabulary words that we encounter in text. We will use the sentence strips to practice writing our own sentences as we deconstruct sentences and rebuild them to make meaning.
I will be able to create educational games to use during center and small group time with the cardstock. This will allow them to work on emerging reading skills in a fun and cooperative way. With the increase in their vocabulary, they will be able to better comprehend any text that they read!
