Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Although some are faced with tough challenges, my students are some of the hardest working little people that you will ever meet. They do their best to focus beyond the challenges and succeed academically and behaviorally. There may be students whose lightbulb of understanding does not illuminate as quickly as others, or students who lack the self-confidence to believe they are capable of achieving high levels of learning. However, none of these obstacles keep them from making strides towards becoming a better learner.

My Project

Each year vocabulary seems to be the weakest literacy domain amongst my students. We work on new academic and domain specific words weekly, but diagnostic scores indicate that my students still lag behind in this area. The curriculum which has been adopted by our district has a phenomenal vocabulary app that can only be used with iPads. Unfortunately, this brand of technology is not provided by my district nor our campus. Providing my students with iPads and headphones would allow them to access the vocabulary app during literacy centers and would hopefully assist in combating the issue of less than desirable vocabulary performance on diagnostic assessments.
