Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is made up of about 225 students in grades PK-12. Currently, 100% of this student population is receiving free or reduced-price lunches. This indicates that our district has a very high level of poverty. The demographic makeup of our school is 39% Native American, 2% Asian, 19% Black, 2% Hispanic, and 39% Caucasian.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and more than 90% receive free and/or reduced lunch (low income/high poverty.
They are fun, energetic and eager to learn. My students comprise all levels of academic abilities including students with disabilities.
My students struggle to acquire and develop mastery of strong vocabulary. Help me give my students a fun and interactive way to acquire and practice new vocabulary and literacy skills.
My Project
Vocabulary is important across the curriculum from language arts and social studies to mathematics and science. It is intimately connected to both reading and writing skills, and these skills in turn are necessary for doing well in school.
Research show that in most cases students have to see, read, and interact with words 5-7 times before they are admitted to long term memory.
This project will provide a variety of resources for my 9-12 grade students to learn and master critical vocabulary that will support academic success in high school and college.
Specifically this project will include grade level workbooks with vocabulary and root word practice for my students. It also provides Barron vocabulary resources that will help students learn critical vocabulary for ACT tests which are required for all my students prior to graduation.
Finally this project includes materials such as highlighters, post it notes and folders to be used in vocabulary activities that support mastery of skills.
