My Students

My students are children who come from a diverse background. I have twenty mixed ability group of students and therefore, materials are needed to keep them engaged and interested in standards to be learned.

The students I have been blessed with this year, while learning for these students require more time and effort they are very anxious zealous learners who need extra TLC both for their academic and social growth.

Therefore, with the appropriate resources, they will have a greater desire to learn and become successful adults. They are my "college bound second graders!" About 50% - 60% of my students are on free or reduced lunch and some don’t have the zeal to do well because of lack of motivation. Resources will help my students to be excited about learning and take them away from the drill and kill of paper and pencil. Learning should be fun and when offered in a fun and engaging way, they will learn the necessary concepts for them to mature into the adult they are designed to be.

My Project

As a teacher, my goal year after year is to enhance the learning environment for my students. This means evaluating what works or did not work and how to create a better learning environment because each child is different and each year brings different challenges. This year is no exception. While it is challenging, it is quite fulfilling! Hence the reason for seeking to sharpen my students vocabulary and comprehension skills. I see how my students light up when they are told it's center time and they can go pull a learning game that works on the areas they need to improve on.

Vocabulary and Comprehension are important areas that must definitely be nurtured and developed but must be done in a fun and engaging way.

Therefore, the games selected will help my students do just that. Exposure is critical to develop and enhance vocabulary skills which will have a positive impact on comprehension. Each game was strategically chosen based on what I have observed yearly based on my students' needs. For example, the 5-Minute Vocabulary Practice Cards will allow students to develop vocabulary skills in a quick and easy way. There are many times when some words are used and the students are not aware that it has different meanings so Understanding Multiple Meaning Teaching Cards will give them more exposure in multiple meaning words and the different context in which they are used. We top it all off with Nonfiction and Fiction Paired Text and Reading Comprehension Interactive Journal to get students to see the similarities and differences between the two genres on similar topics. Finally, getting students to write about what they read will be the highlight to guiding them towards college and career readiness.
