My students need to improve oral comprehension and pronunciation of words by focusing on an engaging way to hear, say and read vocabulary words.
As an ESL teacher I encounter students who have never heard of words that we take for granted. In order for them to explore reading and go places only books can take you, my students have to expand their vocabulary with the help of Smart Talk.
I work for a district that has a 90% Hispanic demographic.
Our school in Texas, has a bilingual program focusing on Hispanic and Vietnamese students. Some parents have to work 2 jobs or are work and then attend school and don't see their children until 8 pm. I love the idea that the students spend the biggest part of their day with me and have an environment that is safe and engaging. Our school encourages parent involvement, unfortunately I only have 1 parent that is able to volunteer from my class.
Students will be talking with Smart Talk, an interactive electronic learning aid that introduces and reinforces the essential vocabulary English Language Learners and all children with limited vocabularies need to know and use every day. This is an engaging program of association and repetition. Students SEE a photograph, HEAR the word associated with the picture, and then REPEAT the word over and over, practicing their pronunciation until they've added the word to their spoken vocabulary. Students then hear the word in IN CONTEXT and are asked QUESTIONS about the target word.
The most important thing for students is to be successful and this is a great tool to aid in their success.
In this day and age, technology is the main way to engage them and hold their attention, with Smart Talk, it will be able to reinforce all that I'm doing already with additional one on one interaction.
