I teach 7th/8th Grade Language Arts, Math, and Algebra at Sumner Academy, located on Chicago's westside. In my quest to prepare my students for the future, I find that my students are in dire need of improving their vocabulary. In ALL of the subjects that the students take, they often encounter words that are unfamiliar or words that they cannot comprehend. When writing, students often use simplistic words instead of using more sophisticated or mature verbage. With that being said, I would like to obtain a class set of 25 thesauruses. I feel that this will be an invaluable tool in developing vocabulary. In my class, I would use them almost daily. When presenting new vocabulary --- whether it be in reading, math, etc. --- the students will be taught and given every opportunity to use the thesaurus. Additionally, when students revise written compositions, they will replace "simple" words with more "mature" words. I personally feel that this simple tool will provide students with multiple exposures to new vocabulary and, therefore, enhance and strengthen their reading comprehension and writing skills.
