This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my students have grown up in a Spanish-speaking household. Vocabulary development is key to their success in English Language Arts.

Many of them are reading below grade level, and the main reason for that is a limited vocabulary.

In order to improve reading comprehension and overall literacy, it is crucial for my students to expand their vocabulary.

I have noticed that my students whose vocabulary is more advanced enjoy reading more and are more academically successful overall.

My Project

The vast majority of my students come from Spanish-speaking homes. As such, they have limited vocabulary in English. In addition to using the definitions already provided by the textbook, we do synonym/antonym activities to increase vocabulary.

In the past, students would use an app on their phones for these vocabulary activities, but this year, many students do not have a phone.

Because of this, I would like to provide my students with a class set of Merriam-Webster Thesauruses so that everyone can partake in the activities. This class set is crucial for vocabulary activities. Without it, students will be limited to just the definitions provided by the textbook.
