Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read! They've already finished 100 books during their independent reading time just in the month since school started.
Many of them are still struggling to resettle their lives after our area was heavily flooded during Harvey last year, and these are books they specifically requested.
Since most of them are learning English as a second language, the high school library doesn't always fulfill their reading level and language needs. However, they press on requesting library books from all over the county.
My Project
Many of my students have been learning English for less than three years, which makes it difficult to navigate a library of predominantly English YA literature like we have at our high school. I distributed surveys to every class to get feedback on each book they have finished this year. The books I've selected are by the same authors or in the same series as those books rated as a perfect five stars by multiple students.
These books will help build a classroom library filled with approachable English books and Spanish books to help them build their literacy skills while they learn English.
These books will not only help them grow their love of reading, but make them feel more included in our school community.
