Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Mark Twain once said "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." As a World Language teacher, I know his words be true as I have seen the power of international travel and exchange in our school.
I am excited to be part of our Spanish student immersion program in Oaxaca, Mexico this year.
We have a group of 17 exceptional students who want to take what they have learned in the classroom and use it! These are a great group of students, all very bright and more importantly, passionate about language learning.
Our teachers are organizing a trip for our Spanish students to spend ten days learning, traveling and living in Oaxaca, Mexico. For many of them it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, many of them have never left the state.
The cost of a trip like this is significant. The students, parents, and community are working hard to raise funds to help subsidize the cost of the trip. But, we need more help.
My Project
I would love for my students to have books, videos, maps and other materials about Oaxaca to help them to better understand the culture, community, and families that they will be living in and with. However, the extra cost of the books and materials adds to the daunting total we are trying to raise.
All of the student travelers are dedicated to global and cultural studies and have taken honors and advanced classes in Spanish. They have also enrolled an extra seminar that focuses on Mexican culture, history, language, cuisine, music, politics and much, much more in order to better prepare for their time in Oaxaca. They want to be as prepared as possible when they visit.
Your help will not only help my students learn more about the city they are traveling to, but show them that what they are doing is important not just in their minds, but to others as well.
They would be so excited to see that someone out there cares enough to help them reach for the stars. It will also show them that they their efforts to fundraise can come true. Your donation will continue their goal of educating their own community about the world outside their neighborhood or city.
