Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school with over 90% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of our students are ELL students with Spanish being their primary language at home. We are also home to a program for students with severe and significant needs. These students are nonverbal, have significant cognitive delays, and many have life threatening medical conditions.
Music is the one place where everyone is learning a new language!
This levels the playing field for our newcomers, as well as our students who have grown up in the United States. Music is also a class that our severe needs students are able to attend and participate in a general education setting.
My Project
My students have been working on their music skills with the guitar, bass, drum set, vocals and ukulele. They have been asking me about playing Mariachi music, as the majority of my students are from Mexico. I want to give them the opportunity to learn how to play instruments native to Mexico, as well as music that is unique to Mexico.
Additionally, I want to teach music from Trinidad and Tobago.
I will use the steel pan drums as a way to play chord progressions in Mariachi music, as well as popular music.
My students took their show "on the road" last spring. I am looking forward to expanding their repertoire to play during our 2019-2020 school year gigs!
