This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
According to the governor, our school has the most diverse population of any school within the state. Our students speak over 20 different languages and come from 80 countries. As a school we have focused on improving ELA test scores, increasing Lexile scores, and fostering a love for reading. Our students read more than 70,000 books this past school year. Students wrote a summary, took a quiz, or completed a book report for each book read.
We have a large percentage who struggle with vocabulary and reading comprehension.
We have been intentional in our efforts to improve literacy. Students have opportunities to join several book clubs, participate in grade level reading competitions, and attend tutorials. Our county has recently provided technology to every student in our schools.
My Project
My ESOL students have a limited vocabulary. This project will give them an opportunity to use English words in a relaxed, fun, and natural environment. Students will come to my classroom in the morning with their breakfast and play vocabulary games with each one another. Students will use the Prefix and Suffix Word tiles and the Greek and Latin Roots Daily Activity Cards to learn the what root words mean and how prefixes and suffixes change the meanings of words. The Vocabulary Building Games, Can Do Vocabulary Games, and the Match and Sort Vocabulary Quickies will provide an opportunity for them to interact with words used in daily language and academics. The Multiple Meaning games will help in understanding nuances and connotations of words.
We have placed an emphasis on parental involvement in our school and parents will be encouraged to come and play the games with their students in the morning.
Many of our parents lack the speaking and oral skills needed to function in our society and this will also provide a non threatening environment for them to learn some English too.
