This year my students range from twelfth grade to transition age. I teach in an autism program in a high-need, low-income area. I have 12 students in my classroom. My students have many sensory needs and seek sensory input constantly throughout the day.
This class of students has so many different skills and interests.
My students love watching the news, completing cooking lessons, and learning life skills. They have big imaginations and love to learn with hands-on activities. My students read at varying levels, are working on reading and understanding current event articles, daily life texts, and recipes. In math, my students are working on functional math to use in the world.
Overall, my students are working on becoming independent in the classroom, problem-solving, and learning self-regulation skills to improve themselves at school and in the community.
My Project
We use velcro, laminating sheets, and dry erase markers so often that I ask for them for Christmas from my family. I will use these items to make visuals and supports that my students need to be successful. We will also make work tasks and functional academic tasks with the materials. My students will take part in making these items by laminating and putting velcro on items as a vocational task. My class utilizes dry erase markers daily to complete their morning work and assignments. They also benefit from math manipulatives to support their understanding of concepts and problem-solving!
