Visually Learning Math: Word Walls with Illustrated Terms

My students need visual aid word wall posters to learn and remember math vocabulary. Math has a language all its own and I need every help to teach my students the language of math.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My kids are just like everyone else--they love to play and they love animals, but these kids especially love horses and rodeos. They're definitely all-American kids. They know the meaning of hard work, and the satisfaction of a job well done. Some of these kids don't have easy home lives, and it's all I can do to get them to school. These kids are truly special and they deserve the best I can offer them.

I try to make my class a place where everyone feels safe and happy.

I will do everything I can to help these students maximize their efforts and be successful. The parents and community have been very helpful and supportive. With your help, we are on track to become even better.

My Project

Children need ten encounters with a new word to learn it. These vocabulary posters put a picture of the definition within the term. For example, you can see the parallel lines, ll, in the word parallel. And that is done with 250 math terms used in the algebra, geometry, and statistics units I teach my kids.

Math is a language, and students need help learning the language of math.

Easily seeing a visual reminder of what a math term means, inside the math term, will help students solidify their understanding and think of the definition whenever they see or hear the word.

These are large, colorful, laminated cards that include Spanish translations at the bottom of each card. My students will learn math concepts easier and at a faster rate. They will be literate mathematicians.
