Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All the students in my class are diagnosed with autism, yet their disability does not define them. While they might see the world a little different than some, they are capable of succeeding in whatever they put their minds to, given the right strategies, skills, and resources to use! Some challenges my students face on a daily basis are social interactions and regulation of emotions/sensory needs.
I teach an Autism Spectrum Disorder Support class for 3rd-5th graders at a Title I school in Georgia.
The purpose of this class is to help prepare my students to integrate into general education classes by teaching them a variety of skills and strategies that will help them be successful in larger class sizes with their neurotypical peers. My students come from a variety of backgrounds; some from single-parent homes and others whose parents speak English as a second language.
My goal as a teacher is to provide my students with the resources they need to be successful in socially, academically, and behaviorally. As a second year teacher at a newer Title-one school, it can be difficult to obtain the resources necessary that will benefit each of my students' individual needs.
My Project
Students with autism learn best when they are engaged with the material and can visually see what they are learning. My students would greatly benefit from a easel and anchor chart paper that can be in close proximity to where they are learning. Having a class made up of various grade levels and a variety of academic levels, my students often participate in rotations with stations all over the room. The portable easel will provide my students access to strategies and learning materials that they may not be able to see at some stations.
A portable easel and anchor chart paper will meet the needs of my students by allowing them to learn and engage in materials anywhere in the classroom.
They will be able to focus on the task at hand due to the close proximity of the material displayed or being created on the easel and anchor charts.
