Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school, HHS, serves students in Richmond, Virginia. Our demographics break down as 90% of the students are Black, Latinx, Native American, or Asian. Although 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, they come to school the best way that they know how: ready to face new challenges. My ESOL students are passionate and eager to learn; they just need teachers with the proper tools.

My students deserve to have a teacher who is well equipped with dependable tools that will support them in providing exceptional instruction.

My Project

Visual aids used in the classroom are essential for English language learners because they provide a different form of explanation. My students will benefit from having the anchor charts displayed and readily available to reference on the requested rack. This will support activating the students' prior knowledge. Activating a student's prior knowledge develops schema and can help students make connections with new information. Without such knowledge, it becomes difficult for students to construct a meaningful mental model of what texts are about.

"Providing a model as the students are taken through the task verbally eliminated ambiguity and gives the messaging in more than one way" (Eehevarria, Vogt, Short, 2010, pg 102).
