As a Seventh Grade English teacher, my two guiding instructional beacons are raising my students' reading levels by two grade levels or more, and teaching them to think critically about what they read and the world they live in. Generally these goals are mutually supportive: as students are able to tackle more and more difficult books they are pushed to think more and more rigorously. However, when your class includes many students who read so far below grade level that the books they read independently are aimed at the critical thinking capacities of a second grader, these goals can sometimes work at cross purposes. An organization called Visual Understanding in Education has spent the last 15 years working on this problem to help teachers create student-centered, discussion-based classrooms that help all students deepen their critical thinking skills in a collaborative setting ,regardless of the fact that they may read at highly disparate levels. The result has been a program called Visual Thinking Skills (VTS), which uses a progression of slides of paintings with gradually more complex narrative structures and degrees of abstraction to create a discussion based classroom where students probe each other's understanding of the artwork to search for deeper meaning in what they see. The VTS curriculum has been extensively researched and tested over the last decade. Students who have participated in this program have seen their English test scores rise dramatically (as they can better think critically about what they read) and their teachers have seen their writing improve as their “vision improves”--they see more details in the world around them and their writing reflects that. VTS is not meant to replace reading in English classrooms. Rather, I will use it once or twice a month as a self-contained program that will be a break from the day to day structure of the classroom and a chance for the students to apply the skills they have been learning in English in a different context. Once I begin using VTS, I hope to innovate on it, both by integrating the subject matter of the paintings we are viewing directly into our English and History curricula and by creating a rigorous framework both for assessing individual students' levels of analysis and (with the students' help) evaluating the depth and collegiality of group discussions.
