This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in Title I elementary school that supports low income families. My students are intensive ESE kids meaning that several are nonverbal and most are on the Autism Spectrum. Each student has unique goals to focus on their greatest needs. I teach a language intensive class where are primary goals are to get my students communicating effectively and interacting with their peers appropriately. It is my greatest hope that with the early intervention I am able to provide that my students will ultimately be mainstreamed during some point of their school career.
My Project
My classroom works best with as many visual supports as possible. I make these supports using card stock paper (thick paper for little hands) and magnets (the business card magnets work better because they are flat and stick better.) My students follow individualized visual schedules on a Velcro strip (another material I requested that we use frequently), with printed icons showing them what activity comes next. Our large white board is magnetic allowing us to incorporate visual manipulatives that can easily be moved depending on the lesson. These manipulatives include illustrations from stories for sequencing, pictures of letter of the week vocabulary, or letters, shapes and numbers for our classroom songs.
The visual supports that I make for my kids with developmental delays or Autism increase their ability to understand the world around them.
They see visual cues that relate to our spoken language making it more comprehend-able. I need more yardstick magnets, and Hook & Loop self-adhesive tape to keep making these for my students.
Pre-K is all about hands on activities and we do not currently have finger paint in my class. My students enjoy painting and using their fingers will incorporate some sensory and fine motor learning.
