Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Next year, will mark the beginning of my fourth school year working with students who are deaf and hard of hearing at the 7th / 8th grade level. My students come from diverse backgrounds and typically have other disabilities that impact their learning such as cerebral palsy, ADHD, and learning disabilities.
This specialized population of learners benefit from visual learning. Typically, my students fall below grade level and have deficits in reading and language skills. At times this is due to the student’s not getting hearing aids or not being identified until 1 to 3 years after birth. This means they are not receiving any language during a time that is most vital for any child.
When deaf/hard of hearing students reach the middle school level, they are realizing that their educational challenges are going to impact their future in a variety of ways. Not only do they face academic challenges, but they also struggle socially due to being in their awkward teen years. Sometimes, I catch students losing focus in my black and white transparencies and turning their focus to hair, nails, and pencil drawings.
A way to enhance their learning is through the use of a LCD projector. Through this, I can create colorful PowerPoint presentations and increase student involvement. A LCD projector would not only create a colorful and interesting learning experience, but also keep them interested and focused throughout the school day. My students could come to the computer to type their responses. It gets them moving and thinking of answers.
Deaf and hard of hearing students struggle with new vocabulary in a similar way that an ELL student would. The projector could be hooked up to the computer the school already has within the classroom (with Internet access) to look up pictures or video to develop a stronger understanding of new vocabulary.
I know that my students and I would be grateful to receive such a great technological learning tool. I want to thank you in advance because I know this is no small request. I can’t wait to see their faces light up knowing that there are people out there that care for them educationally and want to help them succeed! Thank you.
