Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an English teacher at a Title I school on the South side of Chicago. I teach three classes of freshman, and two classes of seniors. In both classes, they read plays. My freshmen are reading Romeo and Juliet, and my seniors always read something very recent. Our school does not have a drama department, so my students do not get exposed to plays in production. It is definitely beneficial for them to read the plays, but watching them offers so much more for the senses. I do my best to get them to read these pieces with emotion, but they really enjoy seeing the pieces performed by trained actors. My freshman get to experience the death of Romeo and Juliet as it should be performed, and not me fake-stabbing myself in the middle of the room! I am asking for a Television, DVD player and a stand to keep in my classroom. I believe that this will benefit my students in discovering what each play looks like on stage, and what a strong reading of each line sounds like. Students learn by modeling, and I am certainly not an actor (come to my class sometime and you'll see!). I currently have 125 students, and each student will benefit from these materials, in addition to all the classes of students that I have after them!
