Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is comprised of 30 amazing fourth-graders whose radiant smiles light up my world! Most of my students come from bilingual households, and all receive free lunch. My students are hardworking, diligent, and dedicated learners.
They live in a community that has experienced a rapid jump in violence.
From 2013 to 2019, the number of shootings each year increased from 16 to 64 — a 300 percent increase.
With this increase, it is imperative that my students continue to dream and enjoy their childhoods while learning from each other.
My Project
As we transition into remote learning, I must provide my students with engaging lessons. I am currently using Google Hangouts to hold classes, and I love it. However, when I write on the board from my "home" classroom, the print comes across the screen backward. My kids are great at trying their hardest to stay focused even with backward print.
Research says that using visuals increases retention by almost 42% and helps develop higher-order thinking skills.
I need to continue to provide my students with visually stimulating lessons to help them hone the fundamental abilities that will continue to enable them to see and conceptualize concepts. By enhancing their tactile hand-eye-mind connections, I will be able to continue to improve their ability to recall facts and retain learning.
I need your help to turn the writing around! Using the technology of an Ipad, Apple pen, and Apple TV, I would be able to show my students examples of math concepts, annotate text with them, and provide them with many other visuals without the distraction of backward text.
