Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the past four-plus years, a grassroots movement has been stirring in the center of Kansas City, Missouri, to open a new, free charter school that offers something new: a school that provides an excellent public education focused on developing and demonstrating understanding while building connections within a diverse community. Our school was first piloted by five community members who wished to have better elementary education options for KC's children.
After research, The Community School Initiative wrote an RFP and rallied hundreds of families together to start our school on its founding journey, and here we are in year two: facing new challenges and obstacles with a larger student body and added grade level.
We are making a huge impact on the KC educational climate, but need help to provide our students with the resources to be their best.
It is a bit of a tumultuous time in education in our country with tighter budgets and state politics that can interfere with what is best for our kiddos. Knowing that it takes a village to raise a child, it takes many selfless strangers like yourself to support and sustain a great school - we are so grateful for you.
My Project
In kindergarten and first grade, we are continuing to improve our fine motor skills through the manipulation of clay and Play Dough. We are moving into 3D sculpture in the second half of our year, and these tools will help us learn how to cut, shape and move clay and similar mediums.
We also are learning about parts of a whole in math and reading, so in order to integrate these skills, we will be learning about illustrators and designers, making and designing our own puzzles.
This project will benefit the whole school and be used not only in the art room, but in the classrooms as well for choice time, integration and small group skills.
