Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student, academically, physically and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.
My Project
Each year, my student read one of several novels of the Holocaust. Through this unit of study, students genuinely recognize the struggles of the main character in fiction or the actual victims in nonfiction who lived and died through the Holocaust.
My students become balladeers of the Holocaust through creating poetry from the pages of their novels and and Holocaust artists by bringing these words to life on a canvas.
Through this project, I see students of all ability levels create beautiful pieces of art that honor those who suffered in the Holocaust. The work is displayed as an art gallery for other classes to view as well as part of their culminating graduation displays.
With your generous support, the art teacher and I will be able to bring the project once again to our students and celebrate the strength and courage of the millions of Holocaust victims and survivors.
