My Students

I have students from 9th-12th grade. Many of them come from low-income families that do not have the opportunity to travel to other parts of the world or provide access to technology at home; many of them have never traveled outside of their state. To graduate, they need two years of foreign language. The only language we offer at my school is Spanish. Some of them enjoy it and get a good grasp on the concepts, some do not. As a teacher, I see their daily struggle with the language, the customs, the characteristics of Latin American Culture, and how interested they really are in the language. Yet, there is something in common between both type of students: creativity and technology use.

My students are creative and like to use technology for everything.

They use the internet and the online translators to understand everything that does not make sense to them like words or concepts. Additionally, they are extremely curious. They will ask me to translate words or sentences for them just because they are curious. If I could combine technology and something they find interesting in Spanish during class time, I know learning will be easier and more enjoyable.

My Project

I believe the Rosetta Stone software with access to authentic Spanish materials will offer my students a different approach to learn the language. Instead of the standard lecture time, they can practice pronunciation, and see how the words are related to their own culture in a more interactive way, just as if they were actually in a Spanish-speaking country. This will satisfy the state standards of reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish as well as their own expectations. The software will also satisfy technology use standards for the state.

This project will provide one-on-one learning with benefits in many areas.

The program will help decrease the chances frustration because the students will go at their own pace reinforcing some of the building blocks of the language. The materials will also help in the development of language structure. In addition, they can be more receptive to learn the language. They will also get to interact with things they find interesting while learning.

Because the materials include relatable instructions, as well as native-speakers instruction, my students will be able to immerse themselves in the culture of Latin American countries. They will also be able to understand cultural differences better. In addition, they will be able to see what it's like to actually be in a Latin American country and what it is like to speak with the people there. In other words, they will be able to travel outside the classroom and into the Latin American world while at the same time learning key skills and relatable context.
