I work with children age birth-22 years old. They are all capable of different tasks and enjoy different activities.
My students are all unique and special in their own way.
They all fall somewhere on the spectrum of blind and visually impaired, as well as being diagnosed with other varying exceptionalities.
They love to look at things that light up, are reflective, and have high contrast. Some of my students present as totally blind and are working on visual resolution.
My Project
I have several students at one school who have a diagnosis called Cortical Visual Impairment. This diagnosis affects the connection between the eyes and the brain and requires specialized materials to be used so that the parent and teachers can work on helping the brain to learn to see again, and make sense of what they are looking at.
Things that are helpful in this early intervention process are high contrast (presenting things all on a black background), reflective things, shiny toys, bright lights, and movement.
I'm going to set up Vision centers in the classrooms that I work in so that the students can have a more effective Vision service time.
